Virus mask – how the results of clinical tests can be translated into everyday virus protection?

The regular masks against an unusual challenge: the equation of failure

Before the coronavirus epidemic, there was no need and thus no consumer demand for a specially designed mask that could be disinfected by masses of civilian users in a home environment in addition to providing easy-to-use, cost-effective and efficient two-way virus protection, which is also comfortable to wear for extended periods.

Therefore, the currently available reusable or disposable masks either protect their users and depending on their general area of usage, they typically filter out either dust, virus or larger particle size contaminants. This is only exacerbated by the fact that those who have glasses struggle with fog formation and humidity, women with smeared makeup, children with straps that always fall off their little heads, and in general, everyone struggles with the fact that being in a mask is very uncomfortable in the long run.

Textile masks and surgical masks may be able to protect against the spread of larger droplets such as dust and aerosols. But in fact, none guarantee virus filtration. In contrast, the KC Virus Mask protects against small particles – meaning larger than 0.027 microns. And it provides full protection for the respiratory system from the entry of viruses, bacteria, pollens, allergens and all types of dust.

Proper defense can only be based on the nature of the attacker

The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through close contact and tiny droplets when infected (even the atypical, asymptomatic) carriers cough, sneeze, talk or yawn. These droplets can also occur during breathing and spread over short distances in the air, especially in poorly ventilated, closed, indoor spaces. People can also become infected by touching a contaminated surface and then touching their face or eyes. Because of these, a mask with the right properties may be the best help in slowing the spread of the virus.

Systematically developed virus protection

During the development of KC Virus Mask, we wanted to provide a solution to all the problems and shortcomings that are a feature of currently available reusable masks. In terms of its technical parameters, the KC Virus Mask is a PPE-R cat. III. COVID-19 reusable personal protective equipment according to Regulation (EU) 2016/425 of the European Parliament and the Council, has a CE2233 certificate and is classified in the FFP2 category regarding testing based on EN 149: 2001 + A1: 2009.

Interchangeable, built-in, high-efficiency twin filters that allow 24-hour active wear are certified by Nelson Laboratories. The assays were performed using Staphylococcus aureus bacteria (approximately 1.0 μm in size) and phi-X 174 bacteriophage virus (approximately 0.027 μm in size). – Viruses similar to SARS-CoV-2 have an average size of 0.06 to 0.14 microns. The filtration performance tests for particles below 0.3 μm resulted in 100% throughout the test, and the 0.027 μm filtration test resulted in a 99.98% effectiveness in blocking the spread of infection. The mask has no exhalation valve to further minimize the spread of infections. Nevertheless, its record-breaking breathing performance provides 95 l / min of virus-free air at a breathing resistance of less than 1.5 mbar (100 Pa) .

The reusable mask we have developed can be easily disinfected between two uses with heat or alcohol at home, but up to 121 °C, even in an autoclave. The carefully selected, skin-friendly and lightweight thermoplastic elastomer, often used in medical devices, rests comfortably in a thin line on the face, so it doesn’t smear makeup and provides an airtight fit so it doesn’t form humidity or fog. The glasses are also facilitated by a specially designed holder on the nose. Thanks to its ergonomic design, the adjustable straps and the two available sizes, it fits all face shapes and sizes equally. The product is also available in various colors (Smokey Grey, Red, Grass Green, Hungarian Tricolor, Punch Pink, Turquouise, Cool White) and Natural Transparent, which can provide an appropriate solution for hearing-impaired individuals.
